Travel - Day One

I'm nearly there - but not quite. I left Toronto this morning at 7:30 - tried to make it all the way through but have had to stop in Mississippi. I have been so immersed in the oil spill over the last month and found today quite strange in that I did not hear any news of any kind (music all the way!). Two things did stand out though - as I travelled further south and stopped for gas - I noticed that the BP gas stations were empty whereas there were lineup's at Shell. I stopped and asked the manager of one of the BP gas stations what he thought about the lack of business. He said that he could not talk to me about it!!! I felt sorry for him. It's horrible to be in a situation where you can not speak openly or risk loosing your job (I'm just guessing that was his concern). However BP would have better success at PR if they had people speak out. If people knew that the gas station might be at risk of closing - and that people in their community would loose their jobs -then maybe their business would pick up. Although I have to admit that I did choose shell over BP.

Sorry - no pictures yet - but I am really close now - so will have time tomorrow to get out and start to see the results of the spill in Louisiana.

Looking forward to day two!
